Excelerate Energy’s solutions eliminate the need to construct large on-shore storage facilities that can require hundreds of acres of land for siting.
With its experience in operating facilities around the world, Excelerate Energy is sensitive to the local environment in which it operates and is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint and reducing potential impact on the surrounding marine environment.
Clean-Burning Natural Gas
Natural gas is an extremely important source of energy for reducing pollution and maintaining a clean and healthy environment. In addition to being an abundant and secure source of energy, natural gas also offers a number of environmental benefits compared with other energy sources, particularly other fossil fuels.
Natural gas is composed primarily of methane. The main products of the combustion of natural gas are carbon dioxide and water vapor, the same compounds we exhale when we breathe. Oil, on the other hand, is composed of much more complex molecules, with a higher carbon ratio and higher nitrogen and sulfur content. This means that, when combusted, oil releases higher levels of harmful emissions, including a higher ratio of carbon emissions, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Fuel oil also releases ash particles into the environment. These are substances that do not burn but instead are carried into the atmosphere and contribute to pollution. The combustion of natural gas, however, releases virtually no ash or particulate matter and lower levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other reactive hydrocarbons.
For the Aguirre project, by switching to natural gas an overall reduction in air emissions of 64% is estimated. The reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), specifically CO2, will be up to 30%.
Protecting Jobos Bay
Excelerate Energy is committed to preserving Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and its inter-tidal tropical ecosystem while ensuring minimal disruption to the activities in the bay. Excelerate Energy will be conducting environmental studies and working with local environmental groups to make certain there is minimal impact on the Bay.
In addition to reducing the air emissions from the plant by switching from fuel oil to natural gas, there will be a major reduction in the number of fuel-oil barge deliveries crossing the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve to the Aguirre Power Plant. Reducing the number of barges crossing the Bay reduces the impact on the endangered manatees that live in the Bay and lowers the risk of fuel oil spilling into the Bay.
Excelerate Energy's FSRUs
Excelerate Energy’s floating terminals not only enable communities to take advantage of the environmental benefits of natural gas, but the terminals utilize the newest and most environmentally friendly fleet of LNG vessels in the world. State-of-the-art emissions-control systems reduce nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide emissions by more than 90% as compared to conventional LNG carriers. To further protect the environment, Excelerate Energy has developed an operational process that reduces normal shipboard water use during the regasification process by nearly 98%.
